The series stars Yoo AhIn (as Jeong JinSoo), Won JinA (as Song SoHyun), Kim HyunJoo (as Min HyeJin), Yang IkJune (as Jin KyungHoon), and Park JeongMin as Bae YoungJae). It tells the story of a supernatural phenomenon in which people are sentenced to hell, the religious organization Saejinrihae, and those trying to uncover the truth of the incident are intertwined. Hellbound is originally based on a webtoon called “The Hell (지옥 in Korean)” and was written by Yeon SangHo (who directed famous films “Train to Busan” and “Peninsula”) and Choi KyuSuk. Although the webtoon and K-Drama are not exactly the same, none of the differences drastically change the story. However, you might find some of the differences interesting. So, here is a randomly ordered list of 5 differences between the “Hellbound” K-Drama and the webtoon. Warning: This article may contain spoilers for episodes 1-2 of the “Hellbound” K-Drama and episodes 1-8 of the webtoon.
1. The focus of the evidence videos
Even though Jeong Jinsoo explains the same set of rules regarding how hellbound people receive their prophecies and later get killed, the evidence video that he shows people is different. In the drama, the first evidence video shows the monsters that execute the killings of people who are bound to go to hell. This is different from the webtoon where the evidence video focuses on the angel that tells people their time of death and the monsters do not appear. This is at least for the very first evidence video that is shown.
2. The first victim’s identity and time of death
The first victim that we meet in the story has a different name, age, and time of death. In the K-Drama, his name is Joo MyeongHun and he is 36 years old. In the webtoon, his name is Joo YoungHoon and he is 43 years old. Additionally, in the K-Drama he is meant to die at 1:20 PM but in the webtoon, his expected time of death is 2 PM. These might be minor details but it makes you wonder why they were changed in the K-Drama adaptation.
3. Detective Jin KyungHoon’s child’s gender
When we first meet Detective Jin KyungHoon’s child in the K-Drama, they are introduced to us as a girl named HeeJung. However, in the webtoon, Jin KyungHoon’s child is a boy named SeongHo.
4. Detective Jin KyungHoon’s reaction at his wife’s crime scene
When Detective Jin KyunHoon went to see his wife at the crime scene of her death, the other police officers stopped him. However, in the K-Drama he used his body to physically push through them and see her. In the webtoon, he takes it a level further by pointing his gun at the other policemen. We also get to learn that her name is SuJin in this scene of the webtoon.
5. The angel’s form
The angel that delivers the victim’s time of death takes on a human-like face in both the drama and webtoon. However, in the K-Drama it takes on a scarier ghost-like form and, in the webtoon, it takes on a prettier ghost-like form.
